Strategies for Advanced Reactor Licensing

Ashley Finan |

NRC's existing licensing processes were orignally developed to handle large, conventional light water reactors. New advanced reactor technologies under development may struggle to go through this process, despite safety and other potential benefits. This report describes how a new licensing system can authorize and unlock the next generation of nuclear power.

This document outlines the Advanced Nuclear Energy Cost-Share Program, which is designed to assist reactor developers by offsetting a portion of their licensing costs with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). It highlights key factors for implementing the program and outlines how funding can be strategically allocated across various licensing activities, with the overarching aim of reducing financial barriers and facilitating the deployment of advanced reactors.
